Houston Ebony Opera Guild, a
company of classical singers based in Houston's African American community is
committed to the expansion of opportunities for participation in and exposure
to opera, traditional Negro Spirituals and other classical music genres. Its
singers are selected by audition. Talent, formal training, and experience are
important prerequisites for qualified singers.
Audition
requirements and procedure:
Membership in the HEOG
Chorus will be by live audition only. No audition tapes, videos or CD's will
be accepted. To schedule an audition time, please complete the Audition
Application. On the form, you will have the option to indicate your first,
second and third choice for audition dates. If you have a need to audition at
a specific time, you may indicate that on the form. Once received, you will
receive notification of your scheduled audition time.
On the day of your audition,
please arrive early before your assigned audition time and be ready to sing
promptly at your assigned time. Each candidate will need to bring the piano
accompaniment for your prepared solo piece. A pianist will be provided for
you.
Each audition will be
approximately 12 minutes long and will consist of the following four
components:
Vocal
Range Assessment: You
will be led through a series of short exercises to test your range.
Prepared
solo piece (preferably an art or sacred song): A
piano accompanist will be provided. Each candidate will need to bring music
for the accompanist.
Sight
Reading: You
will be asked to sight read a choral excerpt with piano
accompaniment.
Tonal
Memory: You
will be led through exercises to check your ability to hear and reproduce
melodic fragments.
